THE AUGUST NUMBER

We’ve got Chekhov, Shakespeare (yes, the ‘Coriolanus’ review is up now), doomed Parisian lovers and a Greek tragedy transplanted to a backyard in Queens.

‘MOULIN ROUGE’ ARRIVES ON BROADWAY, WITH BELLS ON

It’s splashy, flashy, with musical laughs. The Press Nights review of “Moulin Rouge” is here. A cautionary tale about moving to Paris and sleeping with the first showgirl you meet. Plus: 10 important things to know about the show (and the Baz Luhrmann film it’s based on).

‘SEND HER BACK’: THIS MEDEA HEARS IT LOUD AND CLEAR. (MEANWHILE, CITY TO CORIOLANUS: ‘SEND HIM AWAY’)

Two from the Public Theater this month. Here’s “Mojada” (starring Alex Hernandez and Sabina Zúñiga Zarela, in photo), a new adaptation of “Medea” set in Corona Park, Queens. The Shakespeare in the Park “Coriolanus” review is up now too. Kate Burton is outstanding.

NEW YORK TIMES SPOTLIGHT: RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE!

Our favorite recent Arts & Leisure article is Alexis Soloski’s interview with Halley Feiffer and Aaron Posner, two playwrights who have been doing their own versions of Chekhov’s works. Photo: A scene from Feiffer’s play “Moscow, Moscow, Moscow, Moscow, Moscow, Moscow,” which some might know as “Three Sisters.”

SHOW YOUR FACE, KATHY!

Sometimes there’s a good reason for “upstaging.” (As in the scene from “The Patty Duke Show” in the photo. Duke was double-cast, and the actress with her back to the camera was a stand-in.) That’s how upstaging works, technically. Otherwise, it’s just rude.

The Press Nights Glossary is also a good place to learn about Equity houses, black-box theaters, gypsy robes, two-handers and the stalls.

THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE LINES

From current or recent New York productions.

“My mother, I’ll do well yet!”

— Coriolanus (Jonathan Cake. in photo with Kate Burton, who plays his mother), “Coriolanus,” Delacorte Theater

“I’ve never been inside an elephant.”

— Christian (Aaron Tveit), “Moulin Rouge!,” Al Hirschfeld Theater

“I’m in the wrong life, and I don’t have the strength to get out of it.”

— David Cale, “We’re Only Alive for a Short Amount of Time,” Public Theater _________________________

One retired New York Times editor's on-and-off (Broadway) love affair with the theater, theater people, brave new musicals, socially significant dramas, starry revivals, gilded interiors, entrance applause, eleven o'clock numbers and seated ovations.
